Signs and symptoms of sinus infection are caused by an infection and the resulting swelling caused by the bacteria within the sinus cavities. The sinuses are cavities (openings) in continuous connection with the nasal openings in order for both air and mucous to flow free. It also gives our voice a certain sound. When a sinus is blocked (or stuffed) because of swelling and infection the air already inside the sinuses causes pressure and the result is a sinus headache.
what is the symptoms
Sinus infection symptoms can often be confused with having a cold or assuming one has an allergy to something. Symptoms can sometimes be similar and in some cases even the same.
One of the first symptoms you want to look for in a full-blown sinus infection is yellowish mucous. You may be spitting up bits of yellow plugs. If it's yellow you can pretty much assume that you have a sinus infection. Don't be alarmed, you can do something about it at home naturally. You don't want to take antibiotics or other medications that may or will make it worse and expose you to other risks.
If you have a headache it may or may not be sinus-related but if you have yellowish discharge it likely will be. Many people will have sinus headaches without having a sinus infection.
You may or may not have a stuffy nose. Your sinuses get blocked during a sinus infection and the quart of fluid that needs to move through the sinuses every day can't. You want to make sure to keep your body hydrated by drinking lots of fluids to help thin your sinus fluids.
You may have a sore throat or slightly irritated throat. Many people do not make the connection with an irritated or sore throat with their sinuses but irritating drainage seeps down the back of the throat causing this irritation. You can determine if you have a sore throat for other reasons by doing this.
Gargle with some warm salt water. Use about one-half measuring teaspoon salt to one cup of warm water and gargle gently. If your throat is relieved in a few minutes then you likely have a sinus irritation not strep throat or other problems. This doesn't mean you have a sinus infection but you can have inflamed sinuses, or sinusitis from exposure to pollutants, smoke, smog, fumes, chemicals, particles or other factors. But you do want to know the difference. If you have strep throat you'll need medical attention and is contagious.
